    Position duration: Appointment for 1 year from start date, with possibility for additional year(s) of employment contingent upon performance and funding.

    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    The Environmental Markets Lab (emLab) is seeking a highly motivated Land Use Data Scientist (Associate Specialist) to conduct research and analyses on a variety of land management and ecosystem service valuation projects. The research projects include, but are not limited to, quantifying the value of ecosystem services on military bases and exploring the economics and sustainability of wetland restoration scenarios. The Land Use Data Scientist (Associate Specialist) will be responsible for a variety of tasks including preparing, processing, synthesizing, and visualizing data; conducting cost benefit analyses, ecosystem service valuations, and spatial analyses; developing efficient and reproducible workflows to implement best practices for data acquisition and analysis; and working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams of researchers.

    emLab is an interdisciplinary team of scientists based at UC Santa Barbara that conducts cutting-edge, data-driven research on the power, limitations, and design of market-based approaches to tackle the world's most pressing environmental problems. In collaboration with implementing partners, emLab aims to better align environmental objectives and economic incentives in support of sustainable livelihoods and a resilient planet.

    The successful candidate will have strong quantitative skills, a creative and solutions-oriented mindset, ability to learn and work in new modeling environments, and the ability to effectively communicate scientific results to stakeholders, scientists, and policymakers.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    Bachelor's degree in environmental science and management, data science, statistics, natural resource economics, or a related field.

    Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
    In addition, the candidate must have:
    At least 5 years of professional experience providing analytical research support to projects related to environmental science and management, data science, environmental economics, or a related field;
    OR
    A Master's degree in environmental science and management, data science, statistics, natural resource economics, or a related field at the time of appointment.

    Preferred qualifications
  • Excellent quantitative skills including experience collecting, managing, processing, and analyzing large datasets;
  • Proficiency with coding languages such as R and/or Python and experience working with GitHub;
  • Ability to learn and work in new modeling environments;
  • Experience conducting ecosystem service valuation for terrestrial ecosystems;
  • Ability to synthesize and communicate scientific methods and results to a variety of partners and stakeholders;
  • Excellent creative problem solving and troubleshooting skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to take initiative, self manage, and work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team;
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational and time management skills.
