Position title: Assistant Specialist(s) in Marine Science Salary range: The posted UC system-wide salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 24B for the salary range at UCSB. A reasonable estimate for this position is $59,800-$63,100. "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. Position description
Applications are invited for up to two Assistant Specialist positions to participate in marine ecological research conducted as part of the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Ocean project (PISCO) and the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Project (CCFRP) at UCSB. The research broadly involves understanding anthropogenic and climate effects on nearshore marine ecosystems. Projects include (but are not limited to): 1) assessment of Marine Protected Areas on nearshore fish and invertebrates, 2) effects of climate change on nearshore marine systems, 3) spatial ecology and behavior of temperate and tropical fish species, and 4) evaluation of monitoring methods for nearshore marine ecosystems.
PISCO is a west coast consortium that studies anthropogenic effects on nearshore ecosystems in the California Current ecosystem. CCFRP is a collaborative fisheries-scientist research program utilizing commercial passenger fishing vessels to conduct MPA and fisheries monitoring. The appointee(s) will manage, schedule, coordinate students, staff and volunteers and lead field trips for the monitoring programs in all habitats (kelp forests, deep rocky reefs and rocky intertidal). The position will be located on the UCSB campus and field research will take place primarily in the Santa Barbara area.
The person appointed will work closely with the Principal investigator and researchers in the group in developing data products, synthesizing and analyzing those data for research activities that lead to peer-reviewed publications as well as grant proposals. The appointees will manage all data produced in lab projects and will be responsible for developing methods and protocols for data quality assurance and quality control.
Other position responsibilities include:
- Working collaboratively with internal (UCSB) and external collaborators to develop new approaches for collecting ecological data.
- Mentoring undergraduate students and junior scientists in all aspects of the research.
- Coordination with and outreach to state and federal agencies on coastal monitoring along the California coast.
- Participation and presentations at meetings and conferences.
- Preparation of technical reports and scientific manuscripts for publication.
