Position description

The mission of the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) is to create the collaborative, closely-integrated and strongly interactive environment that will foster innovation in nanosystems research and education. CNSI Facilities such as the Microfluidics Laboratory and the Innovation Workshop are key elements in the achievement of that mission.

The Microfluidics Lab in 3430 Elings Hall is an experimental facility for building and testing microfluidic devices and other scientific instruments and is an important resource for students and researchers training in a broad array of engineering and scientific areas at UC Santa Barbara. The Innovation Workshop in 2448 Elings Hall extends the equipment available to researchers, and serves as a makerspace where innovators from across campus can prototype their ideas. Jointly, the facilities operate multiple 3D printers, CNC routers, laser cutters, machine tools, microscopes, a polymer casting workbench, and facilities for electronics testing and assembly. More detailed information about the facilities can be found on the CNSI website or associated Wiki.

The manager of the Microfluidics Laboratory and Innovation Workshop is the primary liaison between the campus community, facility/workshop users and CNSI Leadership and provides professional expertise, guidance, and training in device fabrication to researchers. The Microfluidics and Innovation Workshop manager provides intellectual contributions to research projects in their ideation, planning, execution, and analysis, including working with researchers to identify new approaches, methodologies, or solutions to their fabrication activities; collaborating with researchers to identify novel instruments for their research, and in some cases building these instruments for them; and providing assistance to faculty developing research proposals that will leverage the investment in these facilities. Moreover, both labs (the Innovation Workshop in particular) offer design services to their users - users come in with only a framework of an idea and the lab manager provides the engineering design and construction, with significant intellectual contribution. This engineering is specialized to microfluidics, additive manufacturing, and design of assemblies and systems, all requiring a technical expertise in these fields.

While the position does not require formal, for-credit instruction, the Facility/Workshop manager works very closely with a diverse cohort of trainees - from 1st year undergraduates to PhD candidates and postdoctoral scholars, and to be successful, must enjoy the mentoring responsibilities that come with this position. A very successful undergraduate Workshop Wizards program has been developed to enable trained and motivated undergraduate engineering students to assist with laboratory operations, service requests, and research projects. The Facility/Workshop manager is responsible for recruiting, training, supervising, and mentoring these students.

The appointment is renewable on an annual basis. Salary is dependent on qualifications.

The manager is responsible for all aspects of the facilities including:

Technical responsibilities:
Provide professional expertise and guidance in device fabrication to researchers, including working with researchers to identify new approaches, methodologies, or solutions to their fabrication activities.
Collaborate with researchers to identify novel instruments for their research, and in some cases build these instruments for them.
Assist faculty in developing research proposals that will leverage the Microfluidic Laboratory and/or Innovation Workshop.
Design and build new instruments for the laboratory as needed.
Identify, purchase, install, maintain, and repair the laboratory equipment.
Supervise the Workshop Wizards' fabrication of experimental tools for researchers.
Ensure that the Workshops are in compliance with campus safety guidance.
Provide technical support for other CNSI shared facilities as needed.

Training and Mentorship responsibilities:
Manage the Workshop Wizards program which involves undergraduate laboratory assistants who do much of the routine maintenance and training on the lab tools. This includes recruiting, hiring, and training the Wizards and mentoring their professional growth.
Train users on the safe operation of tools and equipment
Develop safe operating procedures and training materials for equipment
Document training per campus EH&S requirements
Encourage and support CNSI outreach mentorship activities

Management responsibilities:
Build and maintain relationships with campus and industrial partners in order to expand the Facility/Workshop's user base and develop communication channels to the user base to inform, recruit, and increase the lab's relevance and impact.
In collaboration with campus researchers, recommend investments in new tools.
Develop and oversee a financial plan that ensures the long-term viability of the Facility/Workshop.
As required, attending conferences and trade shows to stay abreast of scientific and equipment advances in the field.
Represent the Facility/Workshop and CNSI at meetings with users, vendors, EH&S and Facilities Management.
Oversee the daily operations of the facility

The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position.
