POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Quantum Foundry (QF) is a next generation materials foundry that develops materials and interfaces hosting the coherent quantum states needed to power the coming age of quantum-based electronics. The mission of the Foundry is to develop materials hosting unprecedented quantum coherence, train the next generation quantum workforce, and to partner with industry to accelerate the development of quantum technologies. Widely recognized as one of the top five materials research facilities in the world, the Materials Research Lab (MRL) serves as the innovation engine for discoveries in new materials, operating facilities that are widely used by a broad community. The QF and MRL of the University of California Santa Barbara are searching for a qualified and driven individual for a Specialist (Step commensurate with experience). The position will be jointly appointed to the Quantum Foundry of California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI, 50%) and the TEMPO shared facility of the (MRL, 50%) to assist in the operation and management of a suite of shared facilities instruments, specifically, a variety of low temperature measurement systems.

Job duties include:

CNSI-Quantum Foundry (50%):

Execute a scientific program aligned with the scientific mission of the Quantum Foundry and leveraging Foundry experimental facilities.

Develop and maintain a low temperature optics facility containing an array of cryogenic systems with optical access. This will also involve the training of users who leverage this facility for Quantum Foundry aligned science.

Collaborate with faculty, staff, and users to develop methods and tools in the low temperature optics and materials synthesis facilities leveraged by the Quantum Foundry.

. Occasionally host seminars and organize tours promoting Quantum Foundry facilities and user engagement.

Provide a source of secondary support for Quantum Foundry material synthesis facilities

MRL-TEMPO (50%):

The candidate will perform specialized research developing tools and methods for low temperature measurements. For example, development of low- temperature (milliKelvin) NMR capabilities of battery materials in the Triton Dilution Refrigerator.

Take part in professional activities such as hosting seminars and workshops, publishing research, and attending conferences to present their research and advocate for the facility.

Utilizing their specialized knowledge and expertise, collaborate with faculty, staff, and external users to develop new methods and tools to increase the low-temperature capabilities of the MRL-TEMPO facility and utilization of MRL-TEMPO instruments.

Provide data collection, specialized data interpretation and user training to internal and external users of the Low Temperature Characterization Facility.

With the guidance of the facility director, provide training and application support for low temperature measurements systems in the facility. Primarily
responsible for the Triton dilution refrigerator, but also including Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) and Magnetic Property Measurement System (MPMS) and all of their measurement Options.

In collaboration with other facility staff, help to maintain instruments and other tools in the facility, maintain safety standards and perform other duties in support of facility operation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Master's degree in a physical sciences discipline or at least 5 years of experience in low temperature measurements.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

For Full Specialist consideration: Requires a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or have ten or more years of experience demonstrating expertise in the relevant specialization.

Preferred qualifications

Good hands-on lab skills

Interest in communicating, training, and working with users

Familiarity with low temperature instrumentation and analysis methods
