The BioPACIFIC MIP will create and operate a state-of-the-art user facility dedicated to biomaterials discovery and development. Creating this research ecosystem will require the integration of very broad, disparate datasets from Engineering, Materials, Biology, and Chemistry to enable advanced data mining and machine learning algorithms focused on enabling forward and inverse materials design. BioPACIFIC is seeking a motivated individual to spearhead the setup and deployment of the center's data infrastructure and to enable a national user base to utilize this resource.

Reporting to the Executive Director at UCSB of the NSF BioPACIFIC MIP, and working closely with both the research and operations teams, the Computation and Data Specialist will be responsible for specifying and overseeing BioPACIFIC's data structure, including a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs), and associated connectivity of people and equipment to these systems. The Computation and Data Specialist will also work with the BioPACIFIC computation team to create data pathways between BioPACIFIC data streams and existing research data platforms such as BisQue and Citrine, and with outputs from biomaterials computation and simulation workflows. The Computation and Data Specialist will also work with the computation researchers to set up the appropriate metadata infrastructure necessary to support machine learning algorithms and visualization methods. The Computation and Data Specialist will work with UCSB's Center for Scientific Computing to manage the computing and storage resources supporting this data framework.

The Computation and Data Specialist will investigate data structures in use by complementary national centers and align BioPACIFIC's data inputs and outputs to maximize interoperability. The Computation and Data Specialist will stay informed of the state of the art in data science for synthetic biology, chemistry, and related materials to ensure that BioPACIFIC's data architecture is aligned with industrial and academic standards and nomenclatures. The Computation and Data Specialist will collaborate with in-house Senior Faculty participants, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students to continuously build expertise. Building expertise will include attending and presenting at a bi-monthly technical research meeting with affiliate researchers from both UCSB and UCLA where the Computation and Data Specialist will provide consultation on accessing, querying, inputting, and interpreting data.

External users will also consult with the Computation and Data Specialist to develop a Project Feasibility and Research plan. The Computation and Data Specialist will review BioPACIFIC user pre-proposals and advise on whether the proposed work is technically feasible, or if a proposal requires revision in order to be accepted. The Computation and Data Specialist can also advise on how to set up the work to maximize the likelihood of success. Once the proposal is accepted, the Computation and Data Specialist will be the BioPACIFIC technical Point-of-Contact on the computing aspects of their project. The Computation and Data Specialist will create a user interface for data input, search, and extraction and devote 50% time to serve as a scientific and technical expert and train external users in the operation of this interface, and on setting up, carrying out, and analyzing data in support of their work at BioPACIFIC. Twice per year the Computation and Data Specialist will participate in an open house that will highlight the facilities and research capabilities and promote use by internal and external users.
