The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Counselor, Services for Career Technical Education (CTE), De Anza College.

JOB SUMMARY

The counselor will be working with students enrolled in career technical education (CTE) programs housed in the following academic divisions: Business, Computer Science and Applied Technologies; Creative Arts; Social Sciences and Humanities; and Language Arts. The position will report to an assigned Division Dean.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction and supervision of a Division Dean, provide a wide range of counseling services to students enrolled in Foothill-De Anza's CTE programs. Perform core counseling functions: academic, career, training and professional development and other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In accordance with the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2008, the counselors will deliver core services as their primary duties and responsibilities.
  • Conduct general information sessions about CTE program offerings in assigned division
  • Assessment (evaluation of placement scores, course placement, transcripts, prerequisite clearance)
  • Counseling/Advising and other education planning services
  • Follow-up for at-risk students
  • Assist students with degree audits and applications for certificate and degree awards
  • Provide student referrals for other counseling, advising, and student support services (DSPS, EDC, EOPS, CalWORKs, Student Success Center, etc.)

The delivery of core services should occur via multiple modalities: in-person, online, individual and group meetings, workshops and other innovative ways.

Assist CTE program students in clarifying academic goals and selecting a major and maintaining enrollment priority. Work collaboratively with the Foothill-De Anza College Community College District CTE program department chairs and coordinators, the Counseling Division, and the Office of Outreach and Relations with Schools. Develop other relevant liaisons and networks with on- and off-campus programs and agencies. Monitor and track students' academic progress to ensure attainment of educational goal. Facilitate small and large-group workshops to explain degree audit process. Review and approve CTE program students' applications for certificate and associate degree awards. Provide CTE program students general information about available A.A.-T/.A.S.-T programs, the transfer process, and GE Certification.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

  3. Ability to demonstrate excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and facilitation skills both in-person and online.

Knowledge of:
  1. Knowledge of and the skills to provide services to a multicultural, multilingual, and multigenerational student population, including Special Populations and other underrepresented students.
  2. Knowledge of CTE program offerings, course requirements, and associated occupations.
  3. Knowledge of Foothill and De Anza's certificate and degree applications procedure, GE requirements, and UC/CSU transfer process.
  4. Knowledge of and experience with computers, software, and technology related to counseling: e.g. DegreeWorks, ASSIST.
  5. Knowledge of and experience in establishing and maintaining linkages with instructional divisions, special programs, and Student Services departments.
  6. Knowledge of job placement programs like HandShake and College Central.
  7. Knowledge of and experience setting up and running career fairs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment:
  1. Indoor, office and/or classroom environment. Occasionally in the environment where students' meet and congregate.
  2. Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include summer, evening, weekend, on- and off-campus assignments.

  2. Vision sufficient to read various materials.
  3. Dexterity of hands and fingers to perform the tasks required of the position.
  4. Regularly stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time.

  7. Lifting and carrying objects up to 20 lbs.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling from an accredited college or university OR Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees AND a California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Ability and willingness to work with students pursuing career technical education (CTE) programs, including Special Populations and other underrepresented student groups.
  2. Knowledge of the full spectrum of CTE program offerings and associated occupations aligned with these programs.
  3. Knowledge of job placement programs like HandShake and College Central.
  4. Knowledge of and experience setting up and running career fairs.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, Tenure-Track, Grant Funded, 11-months per year
